Signal good but would like better if possible.

Postby bozzchem on Mon Jun 21, 2010 9:08 pm

I am on the Sprint network using a Sierra 595U aircard. While I'm not too far from cell antennas, I guess the wooded nature of my property precludes me from getting the best signal possible.

I have the CA-819 coupled with an exterior antenna that resembles what one would see associated with a car antenna. My wireless network is disseminated via a Cradlepoint CTR-350 router. With the advent of adding a few new "users" to my network (kids using netflix and other high bandwidth programs) it seems that maybe upgrading the car antenna to something more capable would potentially up the signal received?

If there is a possibility of this, based on the information I've given, I'd appreciate any recommendations for how to do so. I do kind of sit in a "dip" topographically and could have issues based on the trees once their foliage is in full bloom, such as now.

Quite frankly, I don't have any community/legal issues regarding what I can install and would put up a satellite dish if it got the job done. I test drove the 4G card and told them at the time it would probably be back the next day when I realized it didn't have a connection for an external antenna. Needless to say, it went back the next day. Without the CA-819, my system resembles dial up.

Any thoughts/suggestions are much appreciated.

to be quite honest if the mag mount antenna that came with amplifier is mounted on at least an 8 inch by 8 inch ferrous metal surface . It performs as well as any omni directional we sell. The only upgrade would occur with a yagi antenna. Keep these two things in mind if considering a Yagi .
1 ) they must have direct line of sight to the tower you are connecting to
2 ) they must be aimed exactly at the tower . This takes alot of time and patience to do

My setup is pretty jack legged. The antenna is mounted on a cookie sheet that is semi permanently fixed on my roof. Would I be better off with a different metallic surface for mounting the antenna, extending the antenna cable and then mounting the assembly up on my chimney as it's the highest point on the house? (NOTE: Chimneys are NEVER used)

Aesthetics aren't an issue.

Thx.

The metal surface must be ferrous ( not aluminum or stainless steel ). Getting it up higher might help. You can get good extensions at www.eur-am.com ( tnc-tncf ) he sells them in 9 , 25 and 50 foot lengths. They have great prices and very good quality cable.
